The carpet for Armenians was the spiritual value, playing the role of guard-magician to confront extreme states advanced by the life. The carpet used in order to provide successful end for the birth, used in funerals, wedding rituals, and holidays.
What secrets the carpet hides that for nowadays Armenians is unclear, and if it still happens in the traditional use of expressions, it was by force of custom.
For centuries had been rituals, employment rituals associated with carpet and loom (weaver’s machine) in Armenia in order to provide magic power of the carpet. But the biggest secret is the carpet ornaments, color comparisons, symmetry and asymmetry of images, which contain full pantry of Armenian cosmological overviews. This is what caused magic-talisman functioning. During the excavations made in Armenia dating in millennium in I-II BC were found emblems of swastika, water and serpentine which characterize also Armenian petroglyphs dating in BC IV-I millennium. These symbolic images are also preserved in Armenian carpets of the late 19th century. The most common motive finish are images that represent the cosmic tree or cosmic pillar. These ornaments are accompanied by twins, dragons, cosmic balance, images symbolizing eternity, often symmetrically rotating structures. In terms of color, red and blue predominate. In addition to the full background color, black and white are commonly used as partial background cropping, sometimes featuring brown and yellowish colors. These colors are also decorated with ornaments. For dragons four colors are mainly used in the following contrast: red-blue, black-white.
The embodiment of cosmic balance is also built on the contrast of black and white colors. The colors of the cosmic tree are mostly blue, white and sometimes green. From the point of view of the structure of the carpet elements of the carpet are ornaments, which are two (four) or three (five). Disparate or quadrilateral carpets make up the ancient Armenian view of the structure of the universe. According to the structure of Gemini, the universe consists of the upper (heavenly, good, light) and lower (evil, dark) worlds, the color symbol of which is a white-black contrast. According to the imagination of the universe, it is the sky, the earth and the suburbs. The center of the carpet is marked mainly by white and black contrast, symbolizing the cosmic balance. Each individual carpet is separated from the General background of the carpet. Ribs of the typical for carpet complex and mostly strange – three, five or seven. They are the boundary that divides the inner world of the carpet (microspace) and divides it with the outside world. The symbolic context of the carpet structure is complemented by a combination of ornaments.
The ornament in figure 1 symbolizes the struggle of the twins, the death of the cosmos or the death of the cosmic tree. The center of the ornament symbolizes the cosmic order. Figure 2 is a slightly different version of figure 1. By the way, in the fight of the dragons-the twins are two of the patterns (good and evil). Their contrast is represented by black (red) and white (blue) colors. The essence of the struggle of Gemini in the mythical theme of dragonfly. The evil dragon is symbolized by a black pattern, good for the prototype, with white. At the same time, they symbolize female (evil, black, red) and male (good, scarlet, blue) ants. In the same series can also be mentioned 3rd and 4th trim. The row is supplemented with cherry (5th) and cross (6th) in the center with the sign of spatial equilibrium.
The 7th and 8th ornaments are the most distinctive expressions of all ornaments of ornaments characteristic of the ancient world, especially the Chinese symbol (Fig. 10), and the contrast between good man and black white color, the idea of struggle and unity. The latter, according to the fairy-tale thinking, determined the cosmic balance. The eighth ornament of black and white in front of black and white circles in the center of black and white circles. The same is mentioned in the 7th ornament with a combination of black and white colors in one “world” (in the four-dimensional boundaries: the subtext theme of individual ornaments is repeated in a separate ornamental complex and in a carpet-colored microscope carpet.
In General, the installation of rugs in the ritual center of the ritual zone, where the Central participants of the ritual are also present, symbolizes the movement of their crews in the sacred space of cosmic balance and harmony, ensuring their success and safety from evil forces.
